Background of the Study
The influence of television and video gaming on child health has become an increasingly important public health issue, particularly in Zamfara State where digital media consumption is rising among children. Prolonged screen time, encompassing both television viewing and video gaming, has been associated with a range of health concerns, including obesity, poor sleep quality, and behavioral problems (Ibrahim, 2024). As technology becomes more accessible, children in Zamfara State are exposed to digital media at an earlier age, often at the expense of physical activity and face-to-face social interactions.

Research indicates that excessive screen time can contribute to sedentary behavior, which is linked to obesity and related chronic diseases. Additionally, the stimulating content of video games and certain television programs may affect the mental and emotional development of children, potentially leading to issues such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and impaired social skills (Aliyu, 2023). Moreover, disrupted sleep patterns, which are common among children with high screen exposure, further exacerbate health risks by affecting cognitive function and overall well-being.

In Zamfara State, where public health resources are limited and awareness about healthy media consumption is low, the potential negative impacts of excessive screen time on child health are a growing concern. Cultural factors and the lack of regulated content also play a role in shaping media consumption habits among children. This study aims to evaluate the impact of television and video gaming on child health in Zamfara State by examining correlations between screen time and health outcomes such as obesity, sleep quality, and behavioral issues. The research will utilize a mixed-methods approach, incorporating quantitative data from health and lifestyle surveys with qualitative insights from parents and educators (Bello, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
In Zamfara State, the increasing use of television and video gaming among children has raised concerns about its impact on their health. Excessive screen time is linked to various adverse health outcomes, including obesity, sleep disturbances, and behavioral problems. Many children in the region spend a significant portion of their day engaged in screen-based activities, which reduces time available for physical activity and social interactions (Ibrahim, 2024). The lack of public awareness about healthy media usage and limited regulatory oversight over content further compounds these issues.

The problem is particularly acute in Zamfara State, where economic and infrastructural challenges limit the availability of alternative recreational activities. As a result, children may develop unhealthy habits that predispose them to chronic health problems later in life. Despite growing evidence of the detrimental effects of excessive screen time on child health, there is insufficient localized research that quantifies these impacts in Zamfara State. This gap hinders the development of targeted interventions and public health policies aimed at promoting balanced lifestyles among children (Aliyu, 2023).

This study seeks to address the gap by investigating the impact of television and video gaming on various aspects of child health in Zamfara State. By examining health indicators such as body mass index, sleep quality, and behavioral assessments, alongside screen time habits, the study will provide a comprehensive evaluation of the issue. The findings are expected to inform recommendations for parents, educators, and policymakers to mitigate the negative effects of excessive screen time and promote healthier developmental outcomes.

Objectives of the Study

  • To assess the extent of television and video gaming usage among children in Zamfara State.
  • To determine the relationship between screen time and adverse health outcomes in children.
  • To recommend strategies for promoting balanced media consumption and physical activity.

Research Questions

  • What is the average screen time among children in Zamfara State?
  • How does excessive screen time correlate with obesity, sleep quality, and behavioral issues?
  • What interventions can effectively reduce screen time and promote healthier lifestyles among children?

Research Hypotheses

  • H1: Excessive screen time is significantly associated with higher rates of obesity in children.
  • H2: High levels of television and video gaming usage are correlated with poor sleep quality.
  • H3: Implementing structured recreational programs will reduce screen time and improve child health outcomes.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on primary school children in urban and rural areas of Zamfara State. Data will be collected through parental surveys, health screenings, and focus group discussions with educators. Limitations include potential reporting bias from parents and difficulty in controlling for external factors influencing child health.
